Not only do they support me when I overeat, but also aid in everyday healthy digestive function and have a wide variety of health benefits. That conversation can be reserved for another time. With so many options for spices, seasonings, and extracts on the market that can help enhance our food, you might be wondering, “Why should I cook with essential oils?” While cooking methods often depend on diet and personal preference, there are several benefits to using essential oils in cooking. Not only will essential oils provide any dish with powerful flavor, but they also allow you to enjoy any internal health benefits of that oil. They can even provide a safe, natural way to flavor your food when fresh ingredients are not readily available.
And a little goes a long way! For example, just one drop of peppermint essential oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. Whoa!
However, not all essential oils are created equal and some are not safe to consume. Always follow every safety precaution on your bottle of oil and be sure to only use oils for cooking that are intended to be taken internally. A good rule of thumb is to look at the bottle – if it has supplement facts and internal use instructions, it is more that likely safe to consume. I would also suggest being very selective in the oils you buy. Never settle for anything less than the best and always buy them from a company that specializes in essential oils specifically.
Ok, enough chit-chat, let’s dive into a recipe!
Pineapple Nectarine Salsa with Lime and Cilantro essential oils
1 pineapple, sliced and diced
2 small nectarines, diced (add more if desired)
½ cup chopped cilantro
½ cup red onion diced (about half a medium onion)
5 drops Lime essential oil
2 drops Cilantro essential oil
3 teaspoons sea salt
1. Mix all ingredients together.
2. Allow salsa to sit and chill for at least 4 hours before eating to allow flavors to marinate.
3. Serve with chips, over fish tacos, or as a tangy fruit salsa on its own.
